5 Questions to Ask Before An Installation

A synthetic sports surface installation is no minor purchase so it is so important that you’re getting exactly what you want. It can be a daunting process at first and you’ll want to rest assured that the company you’re working with will install a high quality surface, perfect for your needs, which will stay looking fantastic for years to come. To make the process a little easier, we’ve compiled a list of five questions to ask when you’re planning your project.

1. Will The Surface Suit My Sporting Needs?

One of the most important things to consider when selecting a sports surface, is the types of sports which will be played. It’s crucial to communicate with the installation company to ensure the surface is ideal for your sporting needs. Discuss the possible options, pros and cons of each type of surface, and what they would recommend for your particular needs.

For instance, Third Generation (3G) synthetic grass systems are ideal for football and rugby at all levels, and are recognised and accepted as certified playing surfaces by the football and rugby international governing bodies such as the RFU, IRB, The FA, UEFA, and FIFA. However, a 4G system is only suitable for football and is not yet recognised by sports governing bodies.

When it comes to MUGAs (multi-use games areas), they’re fantastic choices for schools and colleges, however, a porous macadam surface is not actually suitable for hockey. Synthetic turf pitches, however, are suitable for hockey. These are all things which should be carefully considered when selecting a sports surface.

2. Are The Current Site Conditions Suitable?

When starting a sports surface installation project, your selected company will need to know what the current site conditions are. You will both need to know if the conditions are suitable for the desired surface. Familiarise yourself with the dimensions of the site, how the company will access the area, and what existing infrastructure is present. Ask your installation company if the current site conditions will affect cost in any way and communicate thoroughly to avoid any unexpected costs or unwelcome surprises.

3. Does It Require Planning Permission?

In some cases, sports surface installation projects may need planning permission. It is important that you are aware of the legal requirements around installing a new surface, getting any necessary permits. For instance, if the use of the area is changing, planning permission may be required. Furthermore, if you intend to ask the company to install floodlights or fencing which is higher than it has been previously, you may need to seek planning permission. Before going ahead with a project, make sure that you are aware of this and have the necessary permits.

4. Does The Time Of Year Affect Installation?

There is really no ideal time to install an artificial sports surface, as it can be carried out at any time of year. However, you may have a preferred time in mind for your project to go ahead. For example, if you’re looking to have a surface installed at a school, you will likely want to have the project commence during a school holiday, when pupils are not around. Check that the installation company is able to work around your schedule and is happy to install your surface at your ideal time of year.

Spring tends to be a popular time for artificial grass installations, so if you’re hoping to have a surface installed in the Spring months, make sure you get your enquiry in nice and early. When discussing your upcoming project with your selected company, make sure to ask for a rough time-frame which they will be aiming for. Even the best planned projects can be affected by surprises and obstacles which may cause delays, but it is important to have a rough time-frame in mind.

5. Can You Work Within Our Budget?

Last but certainly not least, make sure that the installation company you’re working with can complete the project within your budget. When planning a project, they will ask for your proposed budget so make sure that you have carefully considered this ahead of time. Every sports surface installation is a custom project, which means the total cost will depend on a range of factors. Your selected company will likely not be able to accurately estimate a cost without an on-site visit. Have a budget in mind and ensure that the company can adhere to it.
