3G Vs 4G Sports Pitches

Choosing the right sports surface is an important decision for schools, clubs and community facilities alike. With artificial pitches now widely used across the UK, two options are often compared: 3G and 4G sports pitches.

Both offer durability, year-round play and consistent performance, but they’re designed for different needs. In this guide, we break down the differences between 3G and 4G pitches, how each surface performs, and which option may be best for you. Let’s get started.

What is a 3G Sports Pitch?

A 3G (third-generation) sports pitch is a synthetic grass surface that replicates natural grass in playing characteristics. The surface uses longer fibres combined with a rubber infill system, providing cushioning and minimising friction burns and injuries. They’re one of the most common sports surfaces in the UK and are well suited to football, rugby, multi-use games areas (MUGAs) and more.

3G sports surfaces are designed to cope with high usage levels while still delivering reliable ball behaviour and player comfort. Many 3G pitches are built to meet governing body standards, making them suitable for competitive fixtures as well as training.

What Is A 4G Sports Pitch?

A 4G (fourth generation) sports pitch is a newer style of artificial surface and features shorter fibres and a denser structure. There is often minimal or no rubber infill, instead, the performance of the surface is created through the carpet design and specialist backing systems.

4G pitches are lower maintenance with realistic playing characteristics, and are typically a great option for indoor sports areas. Because there is little or no loose infill, 4G surfaces can offer a cleaner, lower-mess alternative while still providing consistent performance. These pitches typically don’t meet regulatory requirements but are great options for football training facilities, community use, and areas where infill management is a concern, such as indoor pitches.

The Difference Between 3G & 4G Pitches

While both surfaces fall under the category of artificial grass, there are some key differences to consider:

3G Pitches:

  • Use longer fibres with a rubber infill for support and shock absorption.
  • Designed to closely replicate natural grass
  • Require regular brushing and infill redistribution, but are lower maintenance than natural grass
  • Recognised & accepted as a certified playing surface by football and rugby international governing bodies; FA, UEFA, FIFA, RFU & IRB
  • Suitable for a wide variety of sports including football, rugby and multi-sport surfaces

4G Pitches:

  • Little or no infill
  • Typically use shorter fibres and rely on carpet density
  • Generally require less infill management and maintenance
  • Meet limited performance standards, so more commonly used for training and recreational play
  • Typically a great option for indoor areas and limited access areas
  • Offer a firmer, more uniform playing surface

Is 3G or 4G Better?

There’s no single “better” option, as the right choice depends on how the pitch will be used.

A 3G pitch may be the better option if:

  • You need a surface approved for competitive play
  • Player comfort and shock absorption are a priority
  • The pitch will host matches as well as training

A 4G pitch may be more suitable if:

  • The pitch is primarily for training or community use
  • You want to reduce loose infill and maintenance needs
  • Cleanliness and durability are key considerations

Factors such as usage levels, budget, maintenance capacity and long-term goals should all be considered before making a decision.
