Electric blue may not be the official name for the blue hockey pitch at Beeston Hockey Club but it’s coined that name since its installation in April 2022. Over the past few months, visitors at the Midlands biggest hockey club remark on just how blue the pitch is. It’s the brightest blue pantone out of the five available, you may think it’s bright from the photos but in person, you’ll need shades.
Why are Hockey Pitches Blue?
Good question. Most hockey pitches are blue with a few exceptions. The simple answer is ‘because it looks good for broadcasting’. Yes, really! The London 2012 Olympics started a new trend for blue hockey pitches after the blue turf made gameplay more visible. Surely you can see how and why just from the images and videos, the ball and markings are not easier to see but make a hockey game more visually appealing to the eye.
Not all hockey pitches have to be blue, but a yellow ball on blue turf has now become standard for professional field hockey tournaments. The electric blue hockey pitch at Beeston Hockey Club has even been dubbed as one of the best for filming in the UK.
Beeston Hockey Club
The hockey pitch is used by people from all walks of life 7 days a week from under 12’s to professional hockey players. Recently the club introduced migrant families to the blue pitch via their partnership with Belong Nottingham to form ‘Bees Belong‘.
Hockey pitches have to be resurfaced every ten years, so knowing that diversity is welcomed on the pitch and that many people get to enjoy it for a decade is rewarding. The pitch is also FIH Globally certified and sponsored by Sandicliffe so being blue certainly has its advantages.
