As of Tuesday 20th October 2026, AS Sports Systems has been acquired by Sportex Group, in a move that strengthens its UK project delivery capabilities and expands its integrated sports surface offering.
The acquisition supports Sportex Group’s strategy to expand its presence in the UK market, bringing an established English contracting business into the group. The relationship between the businesses has developed through AS Sports Systems’ work with Technical Surfaces Ltd, Sportex Group’s maintenance business and the last 3 years working with Sportex Recycling.

AS Sports Systems specialises in high-quality sports surfacing solutions, particularly the refurbishment of existing facilities. The acquisition brings together two businesses with a shared focus on quality, industry experience and genuine customer service, while giving AS Sports Systems opportunities to broaden its market reach through Sportex Group’s combined installation, maintenance and end-of-life recycling capabilities.
Andy Whelan, Managing Director and Founder of AS Sports Systems, said:
“I’m really pleased that Sportex Group has acquired AS Sports Systems. We’ve had a great working partnership over the last three years, and being part of the Sportex Group will help secure the future of the company while creating new opportunities for growth. I’ll remain at the helm for the next three years and am really excited to be part of the journey ahead.”
What does that mean for AS Sports customers and staff?
For existing AS Sports Systems’ customers and staff, it will be business as usual, with continuity of service remaining a priority. Andy will continue to lead for the next three years, helping to maintain the relationships and expertise built over more than four decades. The existing team will remain in place, with the exception of Hayley Whelan, who will step down from her role following completion of the acquisition to enjoy her retirement.
Luke McGeechan, Group Commercial Director at Sportex Group, said:
“We’ve admired the work Andy and his team have done for some time, from delivering prestigious projects to building a recognised and well-respected business. Having developed a great working relationship over the past three years, we knew AS Sports Systems would be an excellent fit for Sportex Group.
“This acquisition is another important step in the wider growth of the group. It brings a respected business into the Sportex family and, just as importantly, a team of capable people who share the values that have been central to our success over the last 15 years.
“By combining our project, maintenance and recycling capabilities, we can offer sports facility owners a distinctive service throughout the life of their sports surfaces: install, maintain, recycle, repeat. Andy’s experience and industry knowledge, alongside the strength of the AS Sports Systems team, will be invaluable as we build on their success, and drive the Group forward.”
