Netball is a dynamic, fast-paced sport and it needs a surface that can keep up. At AS Sports, we know how important it is for schools and clubs to have access to facilities that support both performance and safety. That’s why we offer a range of synthetic surface options that are ideal for netball.
With years of experience delivering netball-focused projects across the UK, we’ve helped clients create surfaces that are built to last. In this blog, we’ll take a closer look at some of our projects from recent years, where netball has played a central role in the design and delivery.
Multi-Sport Flexibility with Netball in Mind
The most popular solution we deliver for netball is the Multi-Use Games Area, or MUGA. These surfaces are designed to host a variety of sports, making them especially valuable for schools, colleges, clubs and communities wanting to maximise limited space.
MUGAs can be built with netball-specific requirements in mind, making them a great option for the sport. For facilities where a standalone netball court might not be feasible, a MUGA offers an efficient and cost-effective alternative that doesn’t compromise on quality. The following projects show the versatility of MUGAs.
Chatham & Clarendon Grammar School
We worked on a project for Chatham & Clarendon Grammar School in Ramsgate in 2023, where we were transforming their sand-filled pitch into a state-of-the-art MUGA with netball in mind. We installed a polymeric surface with markings suited to netball, basketball and tennis, and the surface has since been used by 100 local junior school students for the Thanet Netball League. We were delighted with the result of the project and have loved seeing it in use ever since, still looking fantastic.
Polymeric rubber MUGAs are well suited to the demands of netball, as the surface is shock absorbent and comfortable, very durable, and low maintenance. It’s available in a range of colours and is free draining, meaning you can make the most of the surface all year round.
Kings Langley School
In 2024, we worked on a project at Kings Langley School, where we installed a porous macadam MUGA that catered for both tennis and netball. The surface is suitable for both sports, saving the school money and making the most of the space they had.
Porous macadam is a great choice for a MUGA for netball. It’s a very hard wearing and durable surface, making it long lasting and a great investment. The surface is free draining so can be used all year round, and is low maintenance.
Tong Leadership Academy
We installed a sand-dressed, synthetic grass MUGA for Tong Leadership Academy in 2024. The school wanted to cater to both tennis and netball in one space, so we made sure the surface had markings and was suitable for both sports.
Synthetic turf is a popular choice for MUGAs, particularly those with netball in mind. The surface has a comfortable, cushioned feel, is free-draining and can be used in all weathers. There are different pile heights available, so speak to your chosen installation company to see which option is best suited to your needs.
