The Six Nations is nearly underway, seeing England, France, Italy, Ireland, Scotland and Wales compete for the winner’s title of the international rugby union championship. The current reigning champions are France who won the title in 2022. It has grown in new found popularity in recent years so what is the history of the Six Nations and how can you get involved?
Six Nations Rugby
The Six Nations Championship is the oldest rugby tournament in the world dating back to 1883. Consisting of six nations, originally the five nations until the addition of Italy competing in 2000. There’s a total of 15 matches per championship with both England and Wales winning the most number of times over the years.
This year sees an attempt to reach a wider global audience with even Netflix recording the coverage of the Six Nations. The rugby world cup also takes place this year in France. So now is the perfect time to get on board with one of the most exciting championships in sport.
With each nation primed and ready, it’s hard to predict who will be taking the winning sport for 2023. Scotland haven’t taken the title since the change to Six Nations in 2000. Perhaps it’s their time or will England or Wales retake their respective titles from 2020/2021?
