Sport plays a key role in school life, particularly within the independent education sector. From developing teamwork and leadership skills to supporting student wellbeing, high-quality sports facilities are an essential part of what many private schools offer. At AS Sports, we understand the importance of creating safe, high-performance surfaces that help students thrive, whether they’re competing at a high level or simply enjoying weekly PE lessons.
Over the past few years, we’ve been proud to work with a number of leading private schools across the UK, delivering tailored sports surfacing solutions that meet each school’s unique needs. In this blog, we’re rounding up some of our recent projects for private schools, from hockey pitches and tennis courts to full multi-sport facilities.
Eltham College
In the Summer of 2024, we completed a refurbishment project for Eltham College in London, working alongside Nick Mclaren, the Design Consultant from STRI Group. It was a great project from start to finish, as we removed their old surface and shockpad, altered the existing fencing, installed new Fibretech shelters and performed drainage works, before providing the college with a fantastic new synthetic surface from Lano Sports.
Eltham College takes sports and wellbeing seriously, with over 70 acres of grounds to cater for a wide range of sports. They have a vision of being the number one co-educational school for sport in South East London, and we were happy to be able to play a part in their journey to achieving that admirable goal.
Hall Grove School
In the Autumn of 2024, we teamed up with Traction Sports to deliver a great project for Hall Grove School in Bagshot. We installed a brand-new synthetic sports system from Lano Sports along with upgraded floodlights, pathways, and equipment.
We were pleased to have been selected to work on this project, for a school who truly believes in equal sporting opportunities for all students. Hall Grove School prides itself on a strong tradition of encouraging a “sport for all” ethos, and we were happy to be able to provide them with a high-quality sports surface to help make this possible.
Stonyhurst College
Back in 2023, we worked on a pitch resurfacing project for Stonyhurst College in Clitheroe, the UK’s leading Catholic boarding and day school for 3-18 year olds. They say sport is part of their DNA, playing an essential part in Stonyhurst life. We were honoured to be involved in making this possible, being selected to work on the exciting project.
We removed the old surface before installing a new 15mm Insitu shockpad and state of the art sand-dressed synthetic turf pitch. The bespoke logo and football and hockey goals really finished the project off, and we were pleased with the final outcome. A big thank you to our partners on this project; TigerTurf and Surfacing Standards Limited.
Queenswood School
We worked on a resurfacing project for Queenswood School in Hatfield at the end of 2024, where we were transforming their tired artificial surface. We got to work with remedial works on the base and construction of a new recess, upgraded the floodlights and installed a brand new surface from TigerTurf. We were delighted with the final result.
We admire Queenswood’s attitude towards sports, as they say “one thing is certain: it is hard to avoid a sporting experience at Queenswood”. They give their students a wide range of sporting opportunities and we were happy to provide them with a high-quality sports surface to enjoy for years to come.
Clayesmore School
In the Summer of 2022, we were selected to work on a project for Clayesmore School in Dorset, installing a top of the range hockey surface from Lano on a brand new shock pad. It was a total transformation with fantastic results.
Clayesmore School has a vast sports curriculum, designed with confidence, leadership and teamwork in mind. They fully embrace sport, and needed a high-quality surface to reflect their commitment.
The King’s School
Back in the Summer of 2021, we worked on a hockey pitch for The King’s School in Chester, alongside an independent consultant. We completely transformed their pitch using TigerTurf Evo Pro – the UK’s leading artificial grass product for hockey – and were delighted with the outcome.
The King’s School offers over 28 different sports and are dedicated to giving their students the best surfaces to play on. We were pleased to be able to provide them with a brand new, high-performance hockey pitch.
Whitgift School
In 2021, we refurbished a full-size hockey pitch for Whitgift School in South Croydon. With 24 hockey teams, the school needed a state-of-the-art surface and we were happy to be part of the project.
Over the last decade, Whitgift School have won over 300 national titles across a wide range of sports, and were awarded Top School For Sport in 2020. The sporting talent is second-to-none and the students were well deserving of a high-quality hockey pitch to play on.
Tranby School
After a competitive tender process, we were chosen to resurface a hockey pitch for Tranby School in July 2022. Overseen by Labosport, we completed the project in five weeks and the pitch passed FIH Category 3 testing.
Tranby has a commitment to helping children achieve beyond their own expectations. It’s at the heart of everything they do, extending to the sporting opportunities they offer their students. We were delighted with the results of our project there – a full transformation!
